Bluag Days
bluaggy illustrations
If Mandy had had the slightest inkling that it was going to be a bluag day she wouldn’t have gotten out of bed. She would not have put on her fresh clean socks (The ones with the stripes)
the pouffywhite dress
and would have smooshed more cheerios in the couch.
Mandy brought her bluag-o-meter everywhere she went. Whenever her nose started to twitch, and she’s sneezing and sniffing, the bluag-o-meter turned a crimson red.
Bluag days were floppypancake days. There was always no apple syrup or Vanilla bean ice cream. She had a sinking feeling on days like these. The floppy pancakes made her smiles flip over.
(She is staring are giant-boring pancakes. Chocolate bits and whipped cream that looks like ice-cream are at the side. Mandy is dreaming of appple syrup.)
A list of things you might not see:
- swirlychocolatebits in her milk
- Wallenstein the cat with a kaboodle
- a gold star sticker from Miss Jasmine
- elastic spit that forms shiny bubbles
- chewing gum that never loses it’s taste
- hot yellow butter softening
Mandy felt bluaggish on bluag days. There was never very much things to do.
So she waited
knot unknot knot unknot
(she sits by the stairs playing with her shoelaces. A passing circus can be seen through the window. There are gnome-liked people and elephants. You can only see the legs of some through the window.)
and sighed
Mandy’s breath form shiny dust clouds and make beautiful snowflake patterns on the window pane
She tried doing a shoe shuffle
(she’s outside drawing on the grey ground. She draws shoes and people dancing. A row of birds are on pointe and fall off the roof top and into the sky in parachutes, fading into blue)
and attempted running helter-skelter down the track.
the road turns into glass floors and everyone is roller blading. even the cats, dogs, and small furry creatures.
“It is such a dreadful bluag day!” Mandy exclaimed
“It’s only dreadful if you expect it to be,” mother smiled.
“If you look all around, you may find many things that can turn your bluag day upside down”
And so Mandy started to think.
She started to look around.
she shakes hands with the gnomes and tiptoes to see the face of the very very tall man. she unpeels a snowflake sigh from her window pane and gives it to a rollerskating mouse.
She waves goodbye to the parachuting birds.
to be in writer mode
“You are not likely to find ideas of picture books (or any other kind of book) by going out and looking for them,, but if you are in the right frame of mind ideas will come to you.”
—-Jenny Wagner
too late. i should have switched to writermode much sooner. now i have no vault of ideas, they all evaporated while i was sleeping and if one is to try to dig them out, they solidfy like coal beneath the ground. thesethings do not budge. ohbother.

i get excited explaining ideas and she gets excited too.
and we come up with things like
tendrilsofswirlywind
or a letter or a postcard or a lollypop wrapper
and swirlyapplestrudel.
and you know sister’s rich
when she buys a gorgeous looking orange adidas watch on impulse for cheeringups. and although she doesn’t know this and i don’t like telling her (because we’d rather not get all sappyteary) i miss her everytime she gets online because of this picture she has on her msn:
