It is very important that I tell you who my (real) heroes are today admist the crazyness of Star World’s HEROES press conference + interview with the cast. Pictures will be up in due time (Masi Oki is a complete geek! Ilike!) but it will have to take a backseat for now because today is the day we celebrate teacher’s day in Singapore. To the many who don’t really know how it works here on our island, teaching is hard. In fact it’s so damn hard, we always lose many good and excellent teachers along the way. As society here prides itself on efficiency + merit + allthatstuff, it can overtake the soul sometimes…so there you go.
In the past three years, I’ve taught the priviledged + prettywelloff kids. I’ve also had the greatest opportunity to be part of ghettoschools where the kids watch porn while you’re teaching, runawayfromgangsters, try to spill water over your white shirt, and come into class bleeding and battered. There’s something about the way they even struggle to live life that makes living (for me) so very real. And I am humbled.
While I have left the battlefields, there are many who still trudge tirelessly on, making friends, changing lives, making their classrooms as big as they possibly can. People whom I respect, love, and admire. In no particular order of preference or importance, I present to you my favourite superheroes who honestly DO change the world one step at a time.
happy teacher’s day to di, mom+dad, wennie, ruth, kaye, raph, evelynyeo/liang, mdmshanti, yvwee, seet, mrsteo. you’re an inspiration and the roles you play will always remind me to find life purposes wherever I go.
In celebration of teachersday, may I also take time to remember lifechanging moments again.
